Past captain of the PGA and designer of more than 100 golf courses worldwide.Yet, at 69, the burly Welshman who actually hails from Newcastle, still retains an infectious enthusiasm for all golfing matters in general but the creation of courses to cope with the demands of the 21st Century in particular. And when Dave tells you the new golf course he is designing and masterminding the construction at Aviemore, scheduled to open in June next year is “something special” and “definitely one of my best if not THE best” and destined for a “top five ranking,” then you had better believe him.Dave knows what he is talking about when it comes to golf.Thomas was a long hitting, top class tour pro in his prime. He played in four Ryder Cup matches, lost a 36 hole Open play off to Peter Thomson at Royal Lytham in 1958 and, with a little bit of luck, would have won the 1966 Open at Muirfield instead of finishing joint second to Jack Nicklaus. As one of the world leading golf course designers, Thomas, at the last count, had 110 lay outs under his belt worldwide and another eight, including the one at Dalfaber in the Cairngorm mountains at Aviemore, either under construction or at an advanced stage of planning. Dave and son Paul who joined his dad in the designing business a decade or so ago when he realised that he was not going to be half the tour player his old man was never have to look for work.A Dave Thomas course design does not come cheap but every year they are given new commissions. The Thomas family company designed the Cardrona course near Peebles for the MacDonald Hotel Group a year or two ago.The clients were so impressed that when they acquired a magnificent 220 acre site of mountains, water, heather and part of the ancient Caledonian forests on the Seafield Estate at Aviemore for a new golf course, there was no question that Dave Thomas would be given the job of creating what could well be his finest masterpiece.”These days, golf course designers don get beautiful pristine, uncorrupted settings like this to work with,” said Dave as he surveyed the scene at Aviemore.”It really is something special.
